In August 2011 my sister was diagnosed
with breast cancer. Two weeks later she was
also told she had stage 4 ovarian cancer. I
was with her on both occasions, trying my
best not to set off an alarm that would start a
chain reaction that neither of us was prepared
to handle.
She looked at me and asked in a very calm voice.
How can I be this sick? I feel fine she said, except
at night when I have a hard time breathing. I replied
to her, look the good thing is now we know what
we're up against and all we have to do is find
a doctor/ cancer center that can take care of this.
Just because you have cancer doesn't mean you're
dying. We are going to beat this.
All the while inside I felt like crying but crying was
not a luxury afforded me at that time. I needed to stay
strong for my sister. Little did I know she would
prove my words to be true. Just because you have
cancer doesn't mean you're dying.
